David Shaner was a Montana-based potter who died in 2002. He was attracted to natural materials that attest to the beauty of nature, especially of rocks and landscapes, which is epitomized by the ribbed interior of the piece. In Montana, he worked with a group of artists who worked with hand-built wood kilns. The modernistic approach inherent to his work manifests itself by its quiet simplicity. His work has been reviewed by Frieze Magazine, and was featured in a Retrospective at the ASU Art Museum in Tempe. Stamped, with signature on underside.
